Got a story worth telling?

Some of the best stories are the ones we haven’t found yet.

POP nakaro explores the people, places, collections and pieces of pop culture that give the Gulf South its character. Sometimes those stories are hiding in plain sight — inside a neighborhood shop, behind a collection built over decades, in the work of an artist or creator, or in a piece of regional history that deserves another look.

If you know a story that belongs on POP nakaro, we want to hear about it.

What are we looking for?

A good POP nakaro story should have a strong human connection and something interesting to discover. We’re especially interested in:

  • People — artists, musicians, makers, collectors, creators and personalities with an interesting story.

  • Places — shops, restaurants, venues, attractions and unexpected destinations with history, character or a devoted following.

  • Collections — from comics and toys to records, memorabilia and wonderfully specific obsessions.

  • Pop culture — movies, music, television, comics, toys, gaming and the ways they connect to our lives and communities.

  • Regional history — forgotten places, unusual events, cultural landmarks and stories worth rediscovering.

  • Gulf South connections — stories rooted in Louisiana, Mississippi, the Gulf Coast and the greater region, including Memphis and the cultural connections that tie these places together.

What makes a strong submission?

Is there a story beyond the subject itself?
We’re interested in why something is interesting, how it got here, who made it happen and why people still care about it.

Is there something we can see?
POP nakaro is a visual platform. Interesting locations, collections, archival material, artwork, artifacts and access to the people involved can help turn a good idea into a great feature.

Does it fit POP nakaro?
Our stories live at the intersection of people, place, nostalgia, creativity and pop culture. A submission doesn’t have to check every box, but it should feel at home alongside the stories we already tell.

Can we experience it firsthand?
Whenever possible, we want to meet the people, visit the places and experience the story ourselves. Access to the people, locations and material involved can make a significant difference in whether we pursue a feature.

A few things to know

Submitting an idea does not guarantee coverage. POP nakaro independently selects the stories we pursue and determines how they are researched, produced and presented.

Story submissions are editorial suggestions, not paid placements or advertisements. Businesses are welcome to submit ideas, but the strongest pitches give us a genuine story rather than a promotion.

And don’t worry if you don’t have the entire story figured out. If you’ve found something fascinating and think, POP nakaro needs to see this, tell us what you know.
