Tattoos, toys and monsters

Michael Bogle’s creative world at Hidden Dimension Studio

Tattoo artist and toy creator Michael Bogle brings Japanese toys, kaiju and horror collectibles together at Hidden Dimension Studio in Arabi, Louisiana. In this POP nakaro video interview, Bogle explores how childhood interests in movies, drawing and pop culture shaped his tattoo art, designer toys and original graphic novel. His studio houses a collection ranging from Godzilla and Ultraman to Alien, Evangelion, Gundam and Guyver.

Through his brand Tolzar Toys, Bogle moved from collecting monsters to creating his own. King Krawju, a Louisiana-inspired, sofubi-style designer toy, began with a crawfish photographed at a family boil. That creature became the foundation for an expanding mythology and GOD-KING: Incarnation, a horror graphic novel illustrated by Gabo Elias.

Bogle also discusses the creative process behind tattooing, explaining how consultations, communication and finding the right artist help transform a client’s idea into a personal piece of art.

Hidden Dimension Studio reflects the environment Bogle imagined as a child: a creative workplace filled with toys, artwork and opportunities to develop new ideas. Its Japanese toy gallery welcomes collectors, while individual artists shape their workspaces around their own interests. A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed bathroom adds another connection to the pop culture of his childhood.

For Bogle, tattoos are also a form of collecting. He describes seeking out specific tattoo artists, traveling for their work and recognizing the same personal connection that draws people to paintings, action figures and other collectibles.

Those interests continue to feed one another. Tattooing introduced him to collectors, collecting created opportunities in design and toy production, and his original characters brought new people into the studio. Together, they form a creative practice rooted in the movies, monsters and imagined worlds that first inspired him.
